the idea came about to form a core group of musicians that would then

The tradition was to respect the dead and ensure their eyes remain shut.
The practice of placing coins over a dead persons eyes probably goes back
to the ancient Greeks placing coins with the dead, so that that the
deceased could pay the ferryman (Charon) to take them across the River Styx
to the underworld.

*it*.
Gods that did not follow through on such an oath had to drink from the
river, causing them to lose their voices for nine years, then being exiled
from the council of gods for nine years after that. According to some
versions, Styx had miraculous powers and could make someone
immortal/invulnerable. Achilles may have been dipped in it in his
childhood, acquiring invulnerability, with exception of his heel, which was
held by his mother in order to submerge him. His exposed heel thus became
known as Achilles' heel, a metaphor for a weak spot.
Styx was primarily a feature in the afterworld of Greek mythology, but has
been described as a feature present in the hell of Christianity as well.

DAO TE CHING ON SECTION: #38 - CONSEQUENCES FOR VIRTUOUS DISCOURSE
A person of superior virtue is not virtuous, and this is why he has virtue.
A person of inferior virtue never loses virtue, and this is why he lacks
virtue. A person of superior virtue takes no conscious action and so acts
out of nothing. A person of inferior virtue takes conscious action and so
acts out of something. When a person of superior ‘benevolence takes
action, he acts out of nothing. When a person of superior righteousness
takes action, he acts out of something. When a person of superior
propriety takes action and no one responds, he pushes up his sleeves and
leads them to it. Therefore one resorts to virtue only after losing the
Dao, resorts to benevolence only after losing virtue, resorts to
righteousness only after losing benevolence, and resorts to propriety only
after losing righteousness. Propriety consists of the superficial aspects
of loyalty and trust and is thus the beginning of disorder. Foresight
consists of the flower of the Dao and is thus the origin of duplicity. This
is why the really great man involves himself with its substance and not
with its superficial aspects. He involves himself with its fruit and not
with its flower. Therefore he rejects the one and takes the other.
1. Virtue [de] consists of attainment [de]. Because this means constant
attainment without loss and benefit without harm, we use 'virtue' as the
name for it. Where does one attain virtue? One attains it from the Dao.
By what does one attain the Dao? One fulfils it by functioning out of
nothing. If one's functioning is out of nothing, no one will not be upheld
[zai]. Therefore, as far ss the people are concerned, if one applies
nothing to them, not a single one will be disorderly, but, one applies
something to them, they will lack the means to escape with their lives.
This is why, although Heaven and Earth are vast, they have nothingness [wu]
for heart/mind [xin], and, although the sage sovereign is great, his rule
is based on emptiness [xu]. Therefore I say that one looks at it in terms
of Fu [Return], the heart/mind of Heaven and Earth is seen. If we think of
it in terms of the solstice, the perfection [zhi] of the former kings is
witnessed. Therefore, one is able to extinguish his self-interest and
nullify his personal existence, no one within the four seas will fail to
look to him, and no one from near or far will fail to gravitate to him.
2. If one regards oneself as something special and possesses a heart/mind
of his own, this one body of his will fail to keep itself whole, its flesh
and hones rendered incompatible. This is why the person of superior virtue
only functions it is with the Dao. He does not regard his virtue as
virtue, never holds on to it nor makes use of it. Thus he is able to have
virtue, and nothing fails to he done. He attains it without seeking it and
fulfills it without conscious effort [Wei]. Thus, although he has virtue,
he does not have a reputation for "virtue."
3. The person of inferior virtue attains it by seeking it and fulfills it
with conscious effort, then he establishes goodness as the way to keep
people in order. Thus a reputation for "virtue" is acquired by him. If one
tries to attain it by seeking it, he will surely sufler the loss of it. If
he tries to fulfill it by making conscious effort, he will surely fail at
it. Once the name ‘goodness" appeared, there was a "not good"
corresponding to it." Thus it is that "a person of inferior virtue takes
conscious action and so acts out of something." One who acts out of
nothing stays free of biased action [pianwei]. Those who are incapable of
acting without conscious effort/deliberate action [wuwei] are always
persons of inferior virtue, that is, those concerned with benevolence,
righteousness, or propriety and etiquette.
4. The text always clarifies the distinction between superior and inferior
virtue by citing examples of inferior virtue to serve as contrasts to
superior virtue, so, when it arrives as th person of inferior virtue who
still has the lowest possible capacity for acting out of nothing, he turns
out to be the person of superior benevolence. That is, he is a person
whose capacity is such that he can act out of nothing. Because, when he
[the person of superior benevolence] acts, he acts out of nothing, those
who act out of something regard it [disinterested benevolence] as
calamitous.
5. The root [of action] is found in no conscious effort [wuwei] and the
mother [of action] is found in the nameless [the Dao]. If one rejects the
roots and discards the mother and instead turns to the child, although ones
merit might become great because of it, there surely will he instances when
benefit [ji] fails, and, although one might acquire a praiseworthy
reputation, falsehood too will surely arise.
6. If one is incapable of accomplishment without deliberate action or of
ruling without deliberate application, this, of course, means that
conscious efifort is involved. Therefore there appear those who promote the
sweeping application of benevolence and love. Such love may he free of
biased self-interest, however. Thus, "when a person of superior
benevolence takes action, he acts out of nothing."
7. As such love cannot he applied universally, there appear those who, with
a little more truing here and a little less straightening there, try to
apply righteousness [yi] and moral principles [li]. They rage against the
crooked and bless the straight, assisting that one and attacking this one,
for they act with something in heart/ mind when dealing with matters. Thus,
"when a person of superior righteousness takes action, he acts out of
something."
8. As straightening cannot make people sincere, there appear those who turn
cultural institutions and ceremonial etiquette into superficial
ornamentation. Because those who esteem cultivation and etiquette interact
by wrangling and faultfinding, anger arises where opinions conflict. Thus
it is "when a person of superior propriety ta/res action and no one
responds, he pushes up his sleeves and leads them to it."
9. The greatest thing possible, how can this he other than the Dao? How
could any lesser expression adequately serve to honour it? Thus, although
its virtue is replete, its enterprise great, and its rich abundance
embraces the myriad things, each thing still has access to its virtue, but
none in itself can encompass all of it. Thus Heaven cannot serve to uphold
it, Earth serve to cover it, or man serve to support it. Although the
myriad things are noble, their functioning is based on nothing, and they
cannot reject having nothingness as their embodiment. If one were to
reject having nothingness as his embodiment, he would loos his power to be
great. This is what is meant by "one resorts to virtue only after losing
the Dao."
10. If one’s functioning is based on nothing, he has access to the mother.
This is how it is possible, without his labouring at it, for absolutely all
people to live an orderly existence. However, if one falls from this, he
will lose the mother that gives birth to functioning. If one is incapable
of unconscious effort, he will value sweeping application [of benevolence].
If one is incapable of such sweeping application, he will value truing and
straightening. If one is incapable of truing and straightening, he will
value ornamental etiquette. This is what is meant by one "resorts to
benevolence only after losing virtue, resorts to righteousness only after
losing benevolence, and resorts to propriety only after losing
righteousness." Propriety as such gets its start when loyalty and trust
lack sincerity. The frank and unconventional, refusing to go along with
such pretense, heap scorn on how superficial this is, while those obsessed
with minute detail wrangle over its application. When benevolence and
righteousness emerge from within, acting out of them is still false, so how
much less likely that efforts at external ornament will long endure. Thus
"propriety consists of the superficial aspects of loyalty and trust and is
thus the beginning of disorder."
11. Foresight means knowing something before others do, and it refers to
those who belong to the ‘inferior virtue' category of persons. These people
dry up their intelligence in the pursuit of foresight and apply their
knowledge to devise schemes to deal with the masses. They might get at the
innate tendencies of things [qing] but are responsible for the thick spread
of treachery. They might enrich their reputations hut in doing so ever
increase the loss of sincerity and honesty. The more they labor, the more
situations become obscure; the more effort they make, the more entangled
with filthy weeds the government becomes. The more they dry up their
sovereign's sagehood and intelligence, the more harm befalls the common
folk. If one discards the self and leaves things alone, peace will he had
without conscious effort. If one holds fast to simplicity and the
uncharted block, he need not follow any system of criminal law. However,
one becomes besotted with what wins him [reputation] and rejects what this
[uncarved block] holds for him. Thus 'foresight consists of the flower of
the Dao and is thus the origin of duplicity."
12. If one has access to the mother that provides success, "the myriad folk
model their behaviour on him, yet he does not tell them to do so," and the
myriad affairs are managed by him, yet he labours not. It is because one
functions not by using forms and rules and not by using names that it
becomes possible or benevolence and righteousness, propriety and etiquette
to manifest and display themselves. If one upholds the people with the
great Dao and presses down on them with the nameless, they will have
nothing to exalt and their hearts/minds will have nothing to scheme for.
As each person tends to his own proper afifairs and acts out of his own
sense of sincerity, the virtue of benevolence deepens, the practice of
righteousness rectifies itself and propriety and etiquette become pure
accordingly.
13. When it [the Dao] is rejected as the means to uphold [the people] and
discarded as the means to sustain their lives, use is then made of the
concrete forms it takes and application made of what the intelligence
perceives of it. If [it takes the form of] benevolence, one shows it
esteem. If [it takes the form of] righteousness, one wrangles about it.
If [it takes the form of] propriety, one makes it the object of dispute.
Therefore the deepening of the virtue of benevolence is impossible for one
who uses [the form of] benevolence; the rectification of the practice of
righteousness is not achieved by one who uses [the form of] righteousness;
and the purification of propriety and etiquette is not attained by one who
uses [the form of] propriety.
14. It is when one upholds them [the people] with the Dao and unites and
controls them with the mother that benevolence may he manifest hut there is
no esteem of it, and righteousness and propriety may he displayed hut there
is no wrangling over them. It is by making use of the nameless that names
become honest and by making use of the formless that forms become perfect.
If one preserves the child by holding fast to the mother and makes the
branch tips flourish by enhancing the roots, forms and names will all
exist, but anomalies will not will not occur. Such great beauty [damei]
will make a companion worthy of Heaven, and superficiality will not arise.
Therefore the mother must not be kept at a distance, and the roots must not
be lost. Benevolence and righteousness are born of the mother, they must
not he mistaken for the mother. Implements are produced by the artisan;
they must not he mistaken for the artisan. When one discards the mother
and makes use of the child, rejects the roots and takes the branch tips,
this is manifest in names, there will he distinctions, and, this is
manifest in forms, there will he limits. One may enlarge their size to the
utmost, but there is sure to he something they do not encompass. One may
make them as praiseworthy as possible, but there are sure to he those who
cause calamity and distress. If success depends on making such conscious
effort, how is that worth engaging in?
I CHING ON HEXAGRAM: H62 - MINOR SUPERIORITY, SMALL EXCESS, SMALL
EXCEEDING, PREPONDERANCE OF THE SMALL, SMALL SURPASSING
JUDGMENT: Minor Superiority is such that prevalence may be had, if the
fitting practice of constancy takes place. Small matters may be undertaken
here, but great matters may not be undertaken. The fying bird is losing
its voice, for it should not go up but should go down, because then there
would be great good fortune. { "The flying bird is losing its voice" means
that its voice is sad because it is trying to find a place to stop. The
higher it goes, the less likely that it would find anything suitable, but if
it were to go down, it would find someplace safe. The higher something goes,
the more exhausted it becomes, and nothing finds this more true than a
flying bird.}
COMMENTARY: Minor Superiority is such that one can achieve superiority in
minor things and thereby achieve prevalence. {"Minor things" means any kind
of small matter. Here one achieves superiority in small matters and in so
doing manages to make things go smoothly.} Such superiority succeeds
through the fitting practice of constancy and is something that can be
exercised only when the times allow it. {One may achieve success by
superiority through the fitting practice of constancy, and this can be done
only in response to the exigencies of the times. When one exercises
superiority in reverence and temperance, such a one is fit to practice
constancy.} The soft and weak obtain central positions, and, because of
this, there is good fortune in minor matters. The hard and strong stray
from their proper positions and so are not central, and because of this, it
is not possible to undertake major matters. {The accomplishment of major
matters is surely a thing for the hard and strong. When the soft and weak
insinuate themselves into major things, this forms the Dao that leads to Bo
[Peeling, Hexagram 23].}
There is the image of a flying bird in it [the Xiaoguo hexagram]. {"lt
should not go up but should go down": such is the image of the flying
bird.} "The flying bird is losing its voice, for it should not go up but
should go down because then there would be great good fortune." That is to
go above means insubordination but to go below means obedience. {To go
above means that one rides atop the hard and strong [as Fifth Yin rides
atop Fourth Yang], but to go below means that one gives carriage to the
yang [as Second Yin supports Third Yang]. No greater misfortune can befall
one than when one tries to exercise superiority in insubordination, but if
one exercises superiority in obedience, such superiority will work a
thoroughgoing change and beget good fortune.}
IMAGES: Above the Mountain, there is Thunder: this constitutes the image
of Minor Superiority. In the same way, the noble man in his actions is
superior in reverence, in his bereavement he is superior in grief, and in
his expenditures he is superior in temperance.
APPENDED: They [the ancient sage kings] cut tree trunks to make pestles
and hollowed out the ground to make mortars. The benefit of pestles and
mortars was such that the myriad folk used them to get relief from want.
They probably got the idea for this from the hexagram Xiaoguo [Minor
Superiority].
SEQUENCE: One who enjoys such trust will be sure to put it to use. This is
why Zhongfu [Inner Trust, Hexagram 61] is followed by Xiaoguo [Minor
Superiority].
IRREGULAR: Xiaoguo [Minor Superiority] indicates superiority.
1ST YIN: To be a flying bird would mean misfortune. {At a time of Minor
Superiority, 'to go above means insubordination, but to go below means
obedience," but the resonate partner of First Yin is above in the upper
trigram [Fourth Yang]. Nevertheless, to advance would be to commit
insubordination. To have no place to rest the feet is a misfortune for a
flying bird.}
COMMENTARY: "To be a flying bird here would mean misfortune," and nothing
at all could be done about it.
2ND YIN: This one is superior to his ancestor and meets his ancestress.
He does not go as far as his sovereign but does meet his minister, so there
is no blame. {To exercise superiority and so obtain what one should have is
what is meant by "meet." At a time of Minor Superiority, this one fills a
position that is right for it [it is a yin line in a yin position], that
is, by exercising superiority one here obtains what he should have. An
ancestor is an initiator, and here it refers to First Yin, and an
ancestress is someone who abides within, treads the middle path [follows
the Mean], and so practices rectitude. This one is superior to First Yin
and treads the territory of the second position. Thus the text says: "This
one is superior to his ancestor and meets his ancestress." Second Yin
exercises superiority but does not arrogate to himself that which belongs
to another, so he finishes up at the position of minister and nothing more.
Thus the text says: "He does not go as far as his sovereign but does meet
his minister, so there is no blame."}
COMMENTARY: "He does not go as far as his sovereign," for he must not rise
superior to the position of minister.
3RD YANG: If this one does not exert his superiority and ward them off but
instead follows along, they are likely to kill him, which means misfortune.
{In a world governed by Minor Superiority, the great do not hold sway, so
this allows the petty to achieve superiority over them [literally, "to
manage to pass them (the great) by"]. Third Yang abides at the top of the
lower trigram. As a yang, it is in its rightful [yang] position, yet it is
unable to take the lead in asserting its superiority and so ward the petty
off. This reaches such a state
that Third Yang allows them all [ie. First Yin and Second Yin] to pass it
by, while it, in response [to Top Yin], also follows along behind them. But
when it tries to follow them, Third Yang suffers the misfortune of being
killed. Thus the text says: "lf this one does not exert his superiority and
ward them off but instead follows along, they are likely to kill him, which
means misfortune."}
COMMENTARY: "If this one . . . follows along, they are likely to kill
him," and what can be done about such misfortune as that?
4TH YANG: That this one is without blame is because he deals with
circumstances in such a way that he does not exert his superiority. If he
were to set forth, there would be danger, so he must take warning. One must
not use this one where perpetual constancy is required. {Although the
character of this line is yang, it does not abide in its rightful position
[it is a yang line in a yin position], so it signifies one who can avoid
becoming the object of blame, and this is how he manages to avoid blame
here. Having lost a rightful position in the lower trigram," this
represents someone who cannot assert his superiority. As this one cannot
assert his superiority, he therefore takes advantage of the opportunity to
avoid blame. Thus the text says: "That this one is without blame is because
he deals with circumstances in such away that he does not exert his
superiority." Contentment here is poisoned wine, something for which one
must not yearn. Fourth Yang is located at this unsettled time of Minor
Superiority, and, as it is a yang in a yin position, it is incapable of
taking any action. By taking advantage of this situation, one may protect
oneself and so find it possible to avoid blame. But if one uses this as an
opportunity to set forth and undertake action, he will find it a DAO [path]
that leads to danger. This one does not form relationships with others,
nor do others have anything to do with him, so there is no hand to offer
him help. Thus, when danger threatens, he must do nothing but take
warning, for there is no one he can apply to for rescue. Sunk in such
timidity and weakness of will, all this one can do is try to protect
himself. One with such characteristics who moreover is located in the midst
of this clique of petty men does not measure up to the requirements of
responsibility. Thus the text says: "One must not use this one where
perpetual constancy is required." That is to say, he does not measure up to
the requirements of being employed where perpetual constancy is needed."}
COMMENTARY: "He does not exert his superiority but does meet with the
opportunity to do as he should," for the position is not right for him. "If
he were to set forth, there would be danger, so he must take warning," for
in the end he could not last long.
5TH YIN: Dense clouds do not rain but start off from our western suburbs.
The duke shoots and captures that one there in the cave. {At a time of
Minor Superiority, the small exercises superiority over the great. A six
[yin line] here obtains the fifth position [the rulership of the hexagram],
so this represents the culmination of yin potency. Thus the text has it
that "dense clouds do not rain but start off from our western suburbs."
Rain occurs when the yin are above and the yang exert pressure on the yin
but are unable to break through, for then the resulting vapour turns into
rain. But Gen [Mountain, ie. Restraint] is stopped below, and so such
interaction does not take place here, thus it does not rain. Thus it is
that in Xiaoxu [Lesser Domestication, Hexagram 9] it is because they [the
yang lines] keep moving away and so bring prevalence that no rain falls
there and that in Minor Superiority it is because the yang lines do not
interact [with the yin lines] above that no rain falls here either.
Although a yin is at the height of its powers above, it is never able to
exercise that power. The office of duke is the highest rank of all the
sovereign's ministers. As Fifth Yin represents the apogee of yin potency,
it is referred to here as "duke." Yi [harpoon arrow] here means "to shoot."
Those that stay in caves are creatures that tend to secrete themselves and
lie low. In Minor Superiority, as superiority is small it is impossible for
one to accomplish anything great, just as it is for someone who secretes
himself and lies low. If Fifth Yin with its yin character gains control
over a time of Minor Superiority, it can but garner Minor Superiority, thus
the text says: "The duke shoots and captures that one there in the cave."
Opening the DAO [route] to superiority has nothing to do with capturing,
for such a course would but lead to "dense clouds" and never to rain."}
COMMENTARY: "Dense clouds do not rain," for one [Third Yang] is already at
the top. {The yang is already on top, thus it stops.}
TOP YIN: This one does not meet with the opportunity to do as he should
but rises superior to it. He is a flying bird that goes farther and farther
away, which results in misfortune. Such a course means utter disaster.
{Here the superiority of the petty man finally arrives at its highest point.
As the Superiority of one here knows no limits, he goes so far as to
overreach himself. As such a one pushes his superiority to the point of
overreaching, what can he then ever meet with? If a bird were to keep on
flying without ever stopping,
where would it ever find a place to rest? Such a one brings disaster upon
himself, so what more could be said about it?}
COMMENTARY: "This one does not meet with the opportunity to do as he
should but rises superior to it," which means that he has already
overreached himself.
THE CANON OF SUPREME MYSTERY ON TETRA: 11 - DIVERGENCE
HEAD: Yang ch’i, wriggling, breaks open at the east. Lordly, it emerges
from the multitude of obstructions? Things diverge in their appearance?
This tetragram is aligned with the Spring Onset solar period. Accordingly,
all images in the Head suggest the coming of the new season. With east as
the direction of spring, it is only natural that yang ch’z' should make its
first appearance there. Even the particular wriggling form that yang takes
(ch’un in Chinese) is synonymous with activity in the spring (also ch’un);4
like a young insect working its way out of its chrysalis, yang frees itself
from the confinement of dark earth and yin ch’i. Yang ch’i is masterful,
even godlike, in its promotion of the universal patterns that result in
cosmic harmony. For that reason, it is called "lordly."
The tetragram title implies "divergence," "deviation," "variety,"
"discrepancy," "inequality," and "distinction." At this juncture, the
myriad things diverge further in their characteristic appearances and
activities, less threatened by the ill winds of winter. Divergence can lead
to fault and error, but distinction is to be applauded insofar as it
underlies man’s ability to make ethical judgments.
APPRAISAL 1: Failing in small things,
Attack them yourself
At the source.
FATHOMING 1: Attacking minor failings oneself
Means: As yet, others do not know.
Continuing the argument of the previous tetragram, Appraisal 1 asserts the
wisdom of correcting one’s faults when they first appear so that error
never grows obvious enough to become a source of shame.
APPRAISAL 2: Being steeped in his desires,
He brings about what he abhors.
FATHOMING 2: Steeped in his desires
Means: He is gradually led to error.
The indiscriminate pursuit of pleasure usually ends in disaster. The wise
person, then, moderates his desires lest he gradually become a slave to
them and reduce his chances of future happiness.
One oft-quoted anecdote beautifully illustrates the progressive errors that
evolve from a single false step. The chief minister to the last king of
Shang wept bitterly when his ruler decided to acquire a single pair of
ivory chopsticks. When asked why he lamented so innocuous an act, the
minister replied:
Chopsticks are not to be used with pottery but with cups made of jade or
rhinoceros. Those do not go with vegetarian stews but with the meat of
long-haired buffalos and unborn leopards. And those who eat such meats do
not wear short hemp clothes or eat in a thatched house. Instead, they put
on nine layers of embroidered dresses and move to live in magnificent
mansions with lofty terraces. Afraid of the ending, I cannot help trembling
with fear at the beginning.
APPRAISAL 3: "Might there be ruin? Oh, might there be?"
Thus he is led to the bright light.
FATHOMING 3: "Oh, ruin, such ruin!"
Means: Shocked, he protects himself.
The worthy man weighs each action carefully, knowing full well that even
minor mistakes may lead to his eventual downfall. In consequence, it is the
prospect of ruin that prompts continued self-examination and speedy reform.
Measuring his failings by the hard light of day (the "bright light"), the
prudent individual goes on to win a reputation (a second "bright light").
That explains why, as the proverb goes, "In security the noble man is
mindful of danger."
APPRAISAL 4: Passing over small acts of goodness,
He will not overcome.
FATHOMING 4: Foregoing small acts of goodness
Means: He cannot reach greatness.
The Changes tells us that:
The petty man considers the small good to be of no advantage, so he makes
no effort. He thinks the small sin does no harm, and so he does not give it
up... If good does not accumulate, it will not be enough to make a man’s
name.
Another Chinese classic, the Documents, concurs:
If you do not attend zealously to small acts, the result will affect your
virtue in great ones.
Self-cultivation is a slow process of learning, whereby the individual
becomes practiced in discerning and performing the good act. If the
individual is either too arrogant or too careless to make a habit of small
acts of nobility, great virtue cannot be attained. Like the philosopher
Hsiun tzu before him, Yang Hsiung emphasizes the importance of gradual
habituation to the Good.
Ssu-ma Kuang, however, reads this Appraisal as a critique of those who "go
too far" in small acts of kindness or conscience while ignoring the greater
good. He offers examples from Chinese tradition, including that of Wei
Sheng: Wei Sheng had arranged to meet his lady love under a bridge. The
lady failed to show. When heavy rains came, Wei Sheng refused to leave the
spot, lest he break his word, and so drowned under the bridge. The moral of
the story is, those who are overly concerned with small points lose sight
of the greater goal.
APPRAISAL 5: Having passed the gate, he returns
To enter, gaining that centre court.
FATHOMING 5: Having missed the gate, turning to enter
Means: Before going too far, he reverses his course.
The gate marks an easy access to home. By extension, it symbolizes whatever
facilitates an easy entrance to understanding. For this reason, the
teachings of Confucius are frequently identified as the gates to learning.
The centre courtyard or light well is an integral part of the ancient
Chinese house, providing free access to the gods inhabiting the open air
above, as well as light and rainwater for the benefit of the inhabitants,
As the inner sanctum of the house, it also stands for the innermost
thoughts of the individual and, by a pun, for "conduct according to the
Mean."
In these verses, the individual awakens to the magnitude of his error, then
reforms his conduct in conformity with the Mean. His safe arrival at the
inner sanctum, despite initial confusion and physical barriers, suggests
that he has achieved moral perfection.
APPRAISAL 6: In a great hurry, he misses his gate
And fails to enter his house.
FATHOMING 6: That in a rush, he does not enter
Means: Truly, this is cause for grief.
In contrast to the subject of the preceding Appraisal, this individual is
so muddled that he fails to realize his error. Perhaps other enticements or
heterodox teachings have overwhelmed plain good sense. Confucius said:
If a man finds he has made a mistake, then he must not be afraid of
admitting the fact and amending his ways. . . . To have faults and make no
effort to amend them is to have faults indeed!
APPRAISAL 7: As with a pile of eggs,
He acts with great caution.
From fear comes propriety, then safety.
FATHOMING 7: Precarious as a pile of eggs
Means: From his own danger, he creates safety.
A "pile of eggs" is a popular metaphor in early China for critical danger.
If one approaches any serious problem with due caution, it may be possible
to save the situation. The greater the caution, the greater the likelihood
of success.
APPRAISAL 8: He stumbles forth on fettered feet.
His jaw is branded, his eyebrows destroyed.
FATHOMING 8: The fettered feet
Means: From one step into calamity, no return.
A variety of punishments, each more dangerous than the last, is likely to
befall the individual who does not mend his ways. The specific nature of
those punishments, however, is a subject of dispute among the commentators.
One commentator, for example, says that the evildoer is made to "bear the
cangue (yoke / pillory)" {:
A cangue or tcha is a device that was used for public humiliation and
corporal punishment in China and some other parts of East Asia and
Southeast Asia until the early years of the twentieth century. It was also
occasionally used for or during torture. Because it restricted a person's
movements, it was common for people wearing cangues to starve to death as
they were unable to feed themselves.
}" rather than suffer branding on the face. In light of a parallel passage
in the Changes, the verses may also be read:
Feet fettered, he lurches forward,
[To deep water] just up to the area over his eyes,
Submerging his eyebrows.
Certainly, the second reading emphasizes the imminent nature of the danger.
APPRAISAL 9: Passing decrepit city walls, he finds
Verdant shoots rising from stumps.
FATHOMING 9: Passing the decrepit walls of his city
Means: Through self-reform, life is renewed.
Since neolithic times, city walls in China have been constructed of wooden
pillars packed with wattle-and-daub or tamped earth? Since the city wall
encloses its inhabitants, defining the community and insuring physical
safety, city walls in good repair signify security on the 1) psychic {ie. a
void cursing}, physical, and political levels. Accordingly, their upkeep is
a top priority for stable administrations. Here the city walls are in utter
disrepair either the city is deserted or its government mismanaged.
Intruders can easily breach the city’s defences. Still, there are some
signs of hope: from nearby fallen trees or the wooden supports in the wall
itself, young shoots have begun to sprout. In the midst of death, renewal
occurs. By analogy, even the most hardened of criminals can learn to
recover his best self.

Maimonides in Mishneh Torah, Laws of Repentance (5:1-3), states that
freedom of choice has been granted to every man. If he desires to turn
towards a good path, the ability to do so is in his hands . . .
He further writes, 'This concept is a fundamental principle and a pillar of
the Torah and its Commandments. As it is written [Deuteronomy 30:15]:
'See, I have set before you life [and good, and death and evil]' . . . For
if there were to exist something in the very essence of a person's nature
which would compel him toward a specific path, a specific conviction, a
specific character trait or a specific deed . . . how could G‑d command us
through the prophets, 'Do this' and 'do not do this' . . . ?”
G‑d is asking us to open our eyes. See the needs of those around you."

All to frequently, given the individual's vacillations (ie. as *DILEMMA* in
the inability to decide between different opinions or actions which are
either indecisive, opportunistic or entirely wanton), no achievement is
ever really possible. The Changes aptly compares this haphazard course to
the frenetic movements of the hamster.
#9 - Development in any of the three triadic realms of HEAVEN-EARTH-MAN
(YOU) can occur only when it is timely. As men of the Han Dynasty (206 BCE
- 220 CE) observed, even the sage-master Confucius could not overcome the
limitations [ie. and which is no impediment to myself] otherwise by time to
become ruler of the Empire, so lesser men can hardly hope to prevail. The
gentleman moves when an opportunity for advancement presents itself, but
wise refrains from action when the time is not yet ripe [ie. see link
example below of a wrong phone number: 07-5509-0700 @ 1040 hours on 23
February 2017 from Moran *Realty* Southport, Queensland], lest he endangers
himself. Because he rides on prevailing trends to further his own goals,
he is likely to benefit himself and others.

#10 - Fathoming 5: Advancing East, ignoring the West; Means: Unable to
reverse, he cannot escape. As the #CENTRE of the Tetragram, is Position 5:
Appropriately enough, the first set of three Appraisals are categorised as
THOUGHT (SSU), the initial period of inner reflection that precedes
outer-directed action, the second set of three Appraisals detail GOOD
FORTUNE (FU), the period marked by effective action; and the last set of
three Appraisals talk of CALAMITY (HUO), the failure that ends to follow
success because of careless, immoral, our untimely as promiscuous action
that are relative to the meta-descriptor prototypes which circumscribe the
essentiality dynamic of time itself:

Position 5 presents the main argument against one-sidedness, which holds
for military strategists and philosophers alike: In becoming obsessed by a
small corner of the truth, most men fail to comprehend general principles.
In devising his strategy for living, the wise person considers all factors,
just as the general preparing for battle considers all possible avenues of
attack and retreat. It is the stupid person who concerns himself only with
superficial, opportunism as immediate gratification (the 'back'), without
weighing the fundamental risks (the 'heart'). Having made no provision to
extricate himself from difficulties, he now faces certain ruin; in effect,
he has become his own worst enemy. The concentration applauded in
Appraisal 3 here has turned into *blind* one-sidedness as stubbornness.
Appraisal 6: Acute in categories,
He holds within the Five Gauges
And Ten Thousand Measures.
He is tried and true.
Fathoming 6: Acute as to categories
Means: Riches and rank without measure.
My translation is tentative, as most of the key terms in this poem are open
to a variety of interpretations; I suspect intentionally ambiguous language
has been used to enrich the portrait of the sage. The heart/mind of the
sage is acute in regard to categorical (ie., correlative) thinking and
responsive to the needs of the masses. It also has sufficient capacity to
embrace every conceivable thing within itself; it can 'hold Ten Thousands
Measures,' as Yang Hsiung says. The sagely HSIN operates by strict
standards, derived from *COSMIC* *NORMS* as the improper #CENTRE (#5)
understanding given within that age, by the taking of the Five Gauges as
symbolically being an epithet for the five cosmic phases of Water, Fire,
Wood, Metal and Earth: "Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service
unto them which by nature {
PHUSIS: growth (by germination or expansion), that is, (by implication)
natural production (lineal descent); by extension a genus or sort;
figuratively native disposition, constitution or usage:--([man-]) kind,
nature ([-al])
} are no gods.
But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn
ye again to the weak and beggarly elements {
STOICHEION: something orderly in arrangement, that is, (by implication) a
serial (basal, fundamental, initial) constituent (literally), proposition

That thought has taken me some 36 minutes to write so that it was not
simply coherent, but rather weighted towards the substantial. In short it
